Nepal Disaster

Around 9am local time on August 26, a sudden and devastating flash flood swept down the Bhotekoshi River and its tributary, the Lhende Khola, originating near the Nepal-China border. The catastrophic surge was triggered by a glacier collapse and ice-rock avalanche and subsequent debris flow. The surge sent an estimated 7-meter-deep wall of water and thick debris in places cascading through the northern and central river basins. Multiple riverside settlements, market areas, roads and bridges were swept away or buried under heavy mud. More than 1,300 people are confirmed to have died by the flooding, and still over 5,000 people are considered missing.

Engage Today has received reports from our partners in Nepal that 11 churches have been directly affected by the disaster. Over 100 believers from those congregations were listed as having died or are missing.
One of our partners there has an established network of local pastors, church leaders and community volunteers across the Bagmati province who are responding to this emergency. Communications with contacts in the region, however, are difficult because of infrastructure damage and how remote the areas are.

Displaced families are in need of shelter, potable water, dry food rations, warm clothing and essential medicine. Engage Today is seeking to act in a timely manner by helping our partners respond to this disaster with relief help and also with the message of living hope in Jesus Christ.
